After No Man’s land I mostly hung out with Jay and then also Terje the Estonian girl who came a couple of days afterwards. She was a slim girl. It was through meeting her that I figured out how slim people stay slim….

They don’t eat (I knew that anyway but this was the confirmation) We would go to House of Pancakes (not International… The ORIGINAL!) and get the… er… one breakfast meal (ok I don’t even remember what it was called but it was two slices of toast chopped potatoes with tomatoes and peppers alongside an egg and two slices of crispy bacon, American style so it is rock hard). Whereas Jay and I would leave a clean plate, when she had finished, her plate always looked like she hadn’t touched it, She would pick and eat about a third of the potatoes, half the egg and the rest she would leave. The only thing she would have in copious amounts would be coffee.

On my last night we went and had dinner together at the Kariwak Hotel, and there was a buffet which amounted to TT$240 (£24 or $48) each which is rather expensive by Trinidadian standards. She had been talking about the place non stop for two days and when we got there all she ate was one piece of potato and bits of roasted vegetable. She picked up some mint lamb but never ate it. If I wanted to eat some roasted veg I sure as heck wouldn’t play that much for the pleasure. We had a kitchen where we were staying. She should have gone to the road side, bought the food and cooked it herself for a fraction of the cost we paid that night. Of course I made sure my tongue touched every single item on that buffet!

One night Jay and I went out to this bar and we met some English folk. We were pretty much drunk by then having drunk about 7 bottles of beer, 2 tequila shots and 4 rum and cokes each. There was this couple we were talking to outside the bar where we were smoking even though Jay doesn’t smoke anymore (so he says!) and the man was saying how he worked in Dubai. He was incensed because he said women weren’t equals over there. He was going on and on and on and ariston, so I said,

“Well don’t go there then.”

Jay backed it up,

“Yeah what did you go there for?”

I don’t think this is the response that they were looking for because the woman (I later found out she was called Ali) refused to sit with us anymore. She ordered her husband to find another table!

When I got back to work I found out someone that I work with knows them from her hometown. Apparently in their town she is nicknamed “Sketchy Ali”

Onn my 5th day in Tobago I planned to get across the water to Trinidad to go and see what it was like there and to meet Rasta Puppy. The day before I was meant to go (Thursday 5th July 2007) Jay, Terje and I hit Scarborough to go eat at a place called Eddies. While we are there I went to the ferry port to get a ticket for Friday.

GASP! Horror! They have no tickets left for Friday, Saturday too! I didn’t think about the possibility that the tickets would be sold out. What to do? Jay suggests I get a plane. He tells me the flight is only 20 minutes. Later that day I go to the airport and I am in luck they have virtually a flight every 20 minutes or so, so there are plenty of seats available, and at the bargain price of $TT300 (£30)

So I am off to Trinidad.
