Meeting Skateboard P On New Year’s Day in Porto Da Barra

22/02/07
To those that don’t know Paulo is a guy we met in Brazil, who was with us alot in the last two weeks.

My friend BG has taken to calling Paulo Skateboard P. I asked him why and he said that it was because when he asked me who famous I liked, I said Pharell (looks and dress style) and since that is Pharell’s nickname and Paulo’s name begin’s with a P and fanices himself as bit of a “hippy” he was the substitute.

It’s funny because P actually looks nothing like Pharell but I do have a picture of crazy Diego (a guy that was always on the beach that I met last year) where he looks a bit like Pharell:

I met P properly on New Year’s day while out looking for food. I actually met him unofficially the day before on New Year’s Eve. Eva and I had been hanging around by the lighthouse watching some guys doing Capoiera and were waiting for the right time to go down to the beach to watch the fireworks. There was about an hour before countdown and we both needed to pee so we decided to walk back down to a bar in Porto Barra. Because I had been rushed, I didn’t have time to put my swim gear on, so peeing in the sea wasn’t an option. Don’t judge me. I thought it was nasty too but apparently letting the heavens open in the sea is quite the norm. The first time I tried it took me a couple of hours. I was coached by Natasha who told me to,

“relax and let it flow. Its all mind control. I can pee right now talking to you.”

Anyway back to the story. We went to the bar to use the toilet and then ended up having a drink or three. On our way back we bumped into a guy who was always at the internet cafe where we would eat our club sandwiches or acei for breakfast. He was with this other guy (P) and introduced us all. It’s funny that he was the one to introduce us to P because I never knew and still don’t know his name. I thought P was American as he spoke fluent English with an American accent. As we walked away from them Eva turned to me and said,

“That is soooooo you.”

I replied,

“I know!”

We went back to the spot and managed to get to the beach to watch the fireworks ontime.

Fastforward to New Years Day. The streets were packed because there was the annual concert at the lighthouse, and none of the restaurants were open. We figured that the food thing wasn’t going to happen, so we went to go and watch the concert. We were right at the back of the crowd by the stage so there was lots of space around us. Within 2 minutes of standing there I spotted P standing by himself drinking a can of Guarana and went and spoke to him. It was then that I found out that he was in fact Brazillian and not American. He told me that he had just arrived in Salvador 2 days previously, as he had been living and working in Germany for the past year. BG, trying to play cupid quickly went missing back to the apartment.

After about an hour I started thinking that he was gay. This was for three reasons:

He asked me if there were loads of gay people in London
Told me that he would like to live in San Francisco
Took me for drinks in the gay district, and knew alot of people there who were clearly gay
There were two men kissing (IN THE GAY DISTRICT) and he drew my attention to it and said that it was disgusting

I found it strange that someone with so many gay friends would go out of their way to call two men kissing disgusting, so I asked him,

“Are you gay?”

He got offended. He insisted that he wasn’t gay. It wasn’t my business so I just let him tell me he was straight and didn’t question it.

We hung around the gay district all night drinking caprinhas and then went to the beach early in the morning to watch the sunset. The same pattern was followed pretty much every other night. He seemed to have an intense need to always be somewhere for prime viewing of the sunrise and sunset, maybe him being removed from Salvador for that period of time had made him crave it. I don’t know. He would always want to walk on the seafront as well, as opposed to across the road.

The complexities of Skateboard P can’t all be captured in one blog, So here are some more pictures:
