In Salvador da Bahia there are two distinctly touristy districts. The historic distric Pelourinho and the beach area Barra. Just to give you some background on the two.

Pelourinho:

The Pelourinho, the historic square in the heart of the old city of Salvador, is the center of a remarkable renewal of art and culture. Once a place used to auction African captives and punish rebellious slaves, the Pelourinho has become the center of a resurgence of African-Brazilian identity. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it is now home to groups who reclaim their African heritage through music, dance, drums and art. The streets of Pelourinho vibrate with history, music, art and food—both during the day and at night. The night scene in Pelourinho is a non-stop festival of the senses. Besides the historical buildings throughout the Centro Histórico, there are numerous museums, architectural monuments, and Baroque churches to explore.

Barra:

The Porto da Barra beach is one of the most centrally located. It was the the site of Bahia’s first European settlement, Vila Velha, or the Old Village. On the mouth of the bay between 2 historical forts, it has an intimate atmosphere and good swimming and snorkeling. It is popular with the locals as a place to meet and hangout. On weekends, especially Sundays, the beach can get very crowded, The beach being the first set within the bay and the water is much calmer and thus good for swimming than on the oceanside beaches. It is a fantastic beach to watch amazing sunsets, while sipping your favorite drink. Great place to watch people.

Since we were staying in Barra, we spent most of out time in that area. Salvador doesn’t have a big club scene. The beach is THE CLUB. IT all goes down on the beach. One of the beach highlights was crazy Diego. (The one that said Paulo had a big head) He is pictured here with Natasha:

You know that when Diego gets on the beach that you are going to be watching hours of live entertainment. From his declaring his undying love to me, then calling me a ugly fila de puta, to trying to kiss Natasha, to his declarations of gayness, to pronouncing himself Bahia’s next Next Top Model, it is pure entertainment.

You an get there at 7am and stay for the next 10-11 hours and not get bored. There is always different foods to try, new cocktails, stuff to buy, vendors to haggle with, a performance of some sort, dudes in speedos and someone to come and crack you up for a few hours at least.(aka Diego)

I must have watched the sun rise and set on on that beach sooooo many times.. Enjoooy:
